I’m looking for 2" or 3" downlight options for a high-end apartment renovation in NYC. Planning to install a new drop ceiling specifically for the lights, but I don’t want to use up more than 4" to 5" of ceiling height for the installation.
Ketra and Rania by Lutron are a bit out of budget. I’m currently deciding between Visual Comfort (Element or Entra), USAI, and Lucifer. Which of these would you recommend?
This sounds similar to before—honestly, any of those brands will work well. They’re all solid choices. Hiring a lighting designer would be ideal; they’ll help you set up a detailed lighting plan and can make recommendations you might not have thought of. You could reach out to lighting designers like fognyc or even an electrical contractor like Stellmann; they could connect you with someone in lighting design and handle the installation.
@Sutton
Thanks for sticking with me on this! I thought I had done my research and decided on recessed lights from one of these brands, but consulting a specialist does seem like the smart move.

Think about how each space will be used—where art might go, furniture layout, any focal points for lighting. Having a rough floor plan or a walkthrough video with notes on layout will be super helpful for the designer. The more detail you provide, the better the result.
USAI and Lucifer are both high-end choices, with Lucifer sometimes running a bit more expensive. I’m not totally up-to-date on current U.S. pricing, but I’d expect the final cost, including accessories, for brands like Lutron and Lucifer to be fairly similar.
You might also check which brand offers the best local support in NYC, as after-sales service can be helpful.
@Paxton
Without seeing the layout or design plans, I’d suggest checking out their mini line, which is versatile and performs well. Also consider whether you want color-changing options for ambiance or just a nice range of whites.
