Help with finding alternatives

There is a plastic can inside that is about 4 inches in diameter. These are standard ceiling fixture/junction boxes, intended to have surface-mounted or ‘flush mount’ light fixtures attached to them. If they’re old work, there should be a nail on either side attaching it to an adjacent joist, which is likely why you can’t remove it easily.

To install a recessed fixture, you would have to remove them. Otherwise, stick to surface-mounted lights.

@Flynt
Thank you. Looks like that’s how they are secured, making it difficult to remove them.

That’s a standard 4” round box. It is intended to have any style of suitable surface luminaire attached to it. You don’t retrofit them; they are there to provide the physical attachment and electrical connection of fixtures. Recessed lights are an entirely different thing.

@Lin
Thank you for this. Perhaps I used the word retrofit a bit loosely. I want to swap them out to 5000k versions but can’t find any from Sea Gull, so I’m looking for alternate brands that will be compatible with the current setup.

Literally every single ceiling fixture at any lighting store.

But only those that support a can, right? Can’t go with candles/recessed/ultra-thin lights because I’m unable to remove the plastic can?

@Zev
What? No. That’s an electrical outlet box. It is used to affix flush-mount ceiling luminaires to it. Every and all ceiling flush luminaires. Recessed lighting is something else entirely. This is not recessed lighting.

Why do you like 5000K color temp?

Leaning towards having daylight light in the kitchen and utility areas.

Go with these from Juno. Canless, cheap, recessed, color temperature-selectable, and lumen-selectable, giving you flexibility. You definitely don’t want 5000K in your residence, by the way, unless you’re doing surgery.

@Rory
Thank you. Is $19 a piece a standard cost for these? Saw a few generic recessed lights on Amazon for like $5 a piece.

Do some research on price. I would stick with Juno or Halo personally. You’ll have to remove the box installed in the ceiling to install these, by the way.

Yuck, off-brand integrated LED lights! Go replace that with a better light fixture that allows you to replace the bulbs and stick with a reputable brand such as Philips or GE. Please stay away from off-brand lights. They have too many problems.
