I’m trying to replace my LED downlight, and the current setup has a black part with fins attached to the white bit of the light (image attached).
If I want to replace the whole unit, is there a plug that lets me disconnect everything, or do I only replace the white part? And what type of connector is this called? I remember older setups had screw-in or bayonet-style bulbs, but not sure about these.

Didn’t know you could retrofit older lights like this. Thanks for sharing the photo!
Glad to help! A visit to a dedicated lighting store can really help, as they often have specialized sections for recessed lighting. You’ll find better selections and staff who can give you solid advice. Lamps Plus is a popular option.
If it doesn’t have a connection type like pins or a screw base, it’s probably a fully integrated unit. This means you’d replace the entire unit rather than just the bulb.
You can find tutorials online for the wiring if you’re comfortable with it, though most people just call an electrician for these.
If you want something where you can just change the bulb, maybe consider a fixture that uses halogen bulbs. They often have a metal clip that allows access to the bulb so you don’t have to replace the whole unit.
After some more experimenting, I discovered that the light is attached to a small box (probably a dimmer) with a standard plug. So, it was actually easy to remove. But in the process, I did chip some ceiling material around the fixture! Thanks for all the advice!
