Incandescent light bulb substitute?

Check out a store display in person. Judging them online is really hard.

I’ve tried! I’m in Canada, so I usually shop at Canadian Tire, but I can’t find anything that truly mimics the incandescent glow. I’m also having trouble finding bulbs with a smooth flat surface and warm tones. :((

Sadly, it seems like no brands currently offer something like that.

If you’re looking for C9 size bulbs, there’s a company that makes LEDs resembling incandescent ones. I don’t remember the name, but it’s worth a search.

Thank you so much! I’ll definitely look into it!

The company you’re looking for is Tru-Tone. Their retrofit bulbs are great and look just like incandescent ones. However, one downside is that the paint is on the outside, so it might chip off with handling or storage. Just a heads-up!

I just saw something about this on YouTube: https://youtu.be/qSFNufruSKw?si=eG5IHN8lnk57Lu1X

Ahhh, thank you so much for sharing!!!

Technology Connections on YouTube covered this topic really well. Here’s my takeaway:

  • For a long time, LED Christmas lights have been pretty disappointing compared to incandescent ones.
  • Now there are good options: Tru-Tone for larger bulbs and Vintaglo for mini lights are solid choices.

Sadly, Vintaglo is already sold out for the 2024/2025 winter season. Looks like I’ll be sticking with my old incandescent lights for now.

You can still find smaller incandescent lights on Amazon. I felt the same as you—those “warm white” LEDs just don’t compare to the classic glow of traditional holiday lights. Plus, the old-school lights only use about 40 watts per 20 feet/100 bulbs, so they’re not too wasteful.
