What could replace LEDs? And how would it be better?

What do you think could come next after LEDs?

How would the new tech be better than LEDs?

Would it last longer than LEDs, and how much might it cost?

Any guesses on when it might hit store shelves?

Maybe some kind of self-luminous organic or inorganic materials…

Honestly, I think LEDs are here to stay for a long time. They’re cheap, highly efficient, and last way longer than incandescents or CFLs. If anything were to replace LEDs, I’d guess it could be bioluminescent materials, either natural or synthetic. But it would depend heavily on manufacturing costs and efficiency. Another possible future tech might be lighting based on room-temperature semiconductors, though that’s a long way off.

LEDs last longer than incandescent/CFL bulbs

Funny thing is, I go through A19 LED bulbs faster now than I did with incandescent. Always wondered why.

It could be heat build-up or issues with the circuit board. Many LEDs aren’t rated for enclosed fixtures, which causes overheating. Budget bulbs lack proper heat sinking or ventilation, which shortens their life.

In LEDs, it’s not usually the light-emitting diodes that fail but the circuit board or driver. Incandescents didn’t have this complexity, so they weren’t as prone to early failures.

@Avery
It’s frustrating since incandescents aren’t available anymore. I’ve got fixtures that don’t fit well with these new bulbs. I mean, some LEDs come with specific ‘orientation recommendations’—isn’t that a bit ridiculous? I have enclosed ceiling fixtures with bulbs that burn out every few months. Are there even options for those?

@Vesper
I wouldn’t want to go back to incandescents either, even with their simplicity. Check out Home Depot or online for ‘enclosed rated’ bulbs.

For brands, I avoid unknown names and prefer Philips, Cree, and IKEA bulbs. They may cost more, but they last longer. Cheaper brands tend to have more issues.

@Avery
Spot on! Philips bulbs are my go-to—they have great longevity, accurate color temperature, and high CRI.

I feel like eventually the market will correct itself. As people get fed up with unreliable cheap LEDs, companies might start offering higher-quality options with better warranties.

What brand are you using? I’ve used LED bulbs for years with minimal burnouts. I have some in enclosed fixtures that aren’t rated for them, but they’re still going strong.

Maybe we won’t need lights when everyone’s wearing VR headsets and no one’s in the real world anymore!

I can’t wait for something new because I seriously dislike LEDs.

Maybe you just dislike low-quality LEDs. Good LEDs are fantastic.

Check out Soraa, they make high-quality LED bulbs.

Here’s a good watch about quality LED bulbs: Best LED Light Bulb EVER Made on YouTube.

@Luca
If you’re talking about screw-in lamps, I don’t have a specific brand. But for fixtures, look for ones that use Cree LEDs or have a long life rating. Lithonia and Gotham make good fixtures.

What don’t you like about LEDs?

As a designer, I love LEDs. They’ve really expanded the creative options available.

What’s wrong with LEDs? Good ones are almost as high quality as incandescents and use way less electricity. You might just need to look beyond the usual brands at big box stores.
