@Whitney
At $300 each, would Yuji Skyline be a more economical option?
If you’re open to investing in high-end lighting, consider brands like Erco or Lucifer. They’re known for top quality and long-lasting products, unlike the consumer-grade items you mentioned, which sound more like Amazon finds. Also, some brands have remote drivers, allowing for easy replacement of either the LED board or driver if it ever fails.
@Arley
How much does an Erco or Lucifer bulb cost? And is there a way to see their SPD and flicker depth before buying?

An Erco or Lucifer recessed light can cost around $800-$1,000. Their SPD info should be on their spec sheets online. If flicker’s a concern, also check your dimmer compatibility, as dimmers can sometimes cause flickering.
Try high-end downlight makers like Iris, USAI, or WAC, which might offer more affordable options with good performance.

Good advice! DMF is another solid option (I’m not sure about their flicker performance, though). Many high-end downlight systems need custom housings, so it might mean swapping your cans.
Edit: DMF’s Artafex series might work but you’ll need a dealer and an installer as it’s dealer-only.
What you’re asking about is product development, which is pricey and requires large orders. Finding a DIY solution won’t be easy as it takes a lot of resources. Plus, sometimes we can get too wrapped up in numbers and forget to try things out in real settings.
Consider finding a good lighting store in the Bay Area with a range of high-end products. Take some samples home to test. You might find that dim-to-warm options, for example, look different in person than on paper. I’ve done this myself with audio equipment. Specs are great, but sometimes firsthand experience is best.
Instead of getting lost in specs, try checking out a local lighting distributor with a good showroom. You’re likely to find something that meets your needs without going custom. Trust me, sometimes the best choice is already on the shelf.
@Reese
You’re probably right that I’m getting too focused on specs. I don’t always notice flicker below 20%, but I’m concerned about the health effects like headaches. I’m looking for something Koto HC quality but tunable instead of dim-to-warm.
@Charlie
Are you sensitive to flicker? If not, you may be focusing on an issue that doesn’t actually affect you. I’m no expert, but there’s a tunable version of the Koto line here: Tunable White Koto™ LED Module | ELCO Lighting.
@Reese
The ones I have flicker between 15-35% at 120 Hz, and I can see it slightly. I’ll check out the tunable option, though it might still flicker.
DMF’s M Series might work with a 4" housing and has good specs. We’ve installed them often, and they’re well-liked. What’s your impression on their performance?

I saw they have a CRI of 93. Pretty good! Do they offer an SPD or TM-30 rating? Any info on flicker depth?
I’ve been wary of ‘flicker-free’ claims as some bulbs still have a 10-20% modulation but claim zero flicker.
Maybe just go to a good lighting store where they carry reputable brands and ask them for products that meet your needs? Saves you from needing a custom solution.
