I’m looking to level up my Vectorworks Spotlight skills. Any recommendations on how to get better? Also, has anyone taken the Vectorworks University courses? Are they worth the investment?

Thanks in advance!

I’ve been using Vectorworks for a while and found that just working on various projects and challenges helped me improve a lot. But if you’re looking for more formal education, the Vectorworks University courses are definitely worth considering. They offer in-depth knowledge and can save you a lot of trial and error.

I’d recommend checking out YouTube before spending any money. From my experience, practice is key. If you already have the program, download some sample files to see how they’re built and organized. Then, try to replicate those yourself.

LDI offers Vectorworks Spotlight classes at their annual convention, which is coming up in early December in Vegas. It’s a great opportunity to get hands-on experience and learn directly from experts!

I just kept drawing stuff for fun, coming up with concepts for entire productions and figuring out how to draw it all in 3D. There are plenty of free online resources available to help with that!

I took the VWX University classes, and they’re definitely useful if you want to dive deep into each tool. It’s probably more effective to experiment with the software and look up online guides for specific questions you have.

Pros:

  • Lots of detailed information
  • Step-by-step follow-along instructions
  • Cool certification badge upon completion

Cons:

  • Expensive (especially for pro certification)
  • Most of the content is available for free on YouTube
