Hey everyone! I run a DJ gear and backline rental company down here in Florida, and I’m partnering up with someone to get into the lighting side of things. Budget isn’t an issue (yay!) and my business partner said I should come up with a list of the essentials for our production setup. I’m sure we’ll be using LED panels for visuals, but beyond that, I’m totally lost on what else we need. I could really use some guidance to make a solid list!
For context, I’m a house music DJ/producer, and I already own a full CDJ setup. Also, we’re running a 30k watt sound system if that helps with suggestions.
Feel free to ask any questions, and I’ll keep updating this as we go along. Appreciate any advice you can throw my way. Thanks in advance!
Hey! Since you’re already set on LED panels, I’d recommend getting some moving head lights. They add a ton of dynamics to your visuals, especially for house music sets. Look into something like Martin or Chauvet models. Also, haze machines are a must for making those lights pop!
I second what Rahul has said about moving heads. Also, don’t forget to get some decent wash lights to fill in the gaps. You’ll want your entire stage lit up, not just the effects from the LEDs and moving heads.
Definitely invest in some uplighting for the venue. You can change the whole mood of a room with a few well-placed uplights. As for control, I’d recommend getting a lighting controller like a MA Lighting GrandMA or Chamsys. That way, you can sync everything to the music and make it look professional.
Don’t forget about safety! Make sure to invest in some good truss and stands for mounting your lights. Having sturdy equipment is key, especially if you’re running big events with high wattage like that 30k system you mentioned. Better safe than sorry!
As someone who also DJs house music, I’d suggest strobe lights and lasers. They’re killer for building energy during drops. Just make sure to use them sparingly so you don’t overwhelm the crowd.
