Hey everyone, I’ve got Halo H995ICAT recessed lighting housings installed in my ceiling, but they don’t have the typical Edison screw bases. Instead, they use these orange quick disconnects.
Right now, I’ve got some 4" canless LEDs in there, but I’m hoping to swap them out for BR30 or A19 bulbs. The problem is, I can easily find retrofit kits that convert quick disconnects to screw bases, but not the reverse.
After digging around, I found out California regulations are likely behind this—trying to discourage incandescent bulbs by limiting the use of screw bases.
Does anyone know of a way around this? I’ve found some high-quality bulbs from yujilighting that I’d really like to use, but I’m not a fan of the ELCO or HALO canless options.
For reference, I’m aiming for around 1000 lux or higher for general room lighting during the day, with top-notch SPD and tunable color temperatures. Most of the rooms I have are set up with Halo H995ICAT and ELCO EL45530W fixtures.
Any ideas or solutions would be super appreciated!
Man, those regulations are a pain. Before you go with any workaround, just be aware some jurisdictions don’t allow modifications to light fixtures that involve Edison bases because of fire safety concerns. If you really want those bulbs from yujilighting, you might want to check local codes first. Just a heads-up, don’t want you running into trouble later!
Honestly, if you’re after such a specific lighting setup, it might be worth swapping the whole housing out for something that suits the bulbs you want. You could go with BR30-compatible cans, or even better, go for adjustable trims that allow you to set the brightness and temperature exactly how you want. It’ll cost a bit more upfront but save you the headache in the long run.
Hey, I feel you on the frustration with those quick disconnects, but I’d actually stick with canless LEDs. The tech has gotten so much better over the last few years. I’ve used some from HALO that have adjustable temperatures and they’re great for tunable lighting. They might not hit 1000 lux in all spaces, but with the right mix, it could get close. Plus, no extra adapters needed!
If you’re sold on the quality of the yujilighting bulbs, have you checked if they offer any retrofit kits for cans like the HALO H995ICAT? Some companies are starting to make custom-fit retrofit kits that allow for non-standard installations, and yujilighting might have something that’ll work without needing to mess with the quick disconnect setup too much. Worth a look!
Since you’re looking for tunable temperature and high lux levels, why not try smart bulbs? You can control color temperature and brightness through an app. No need for specialized bulbs if you can adjust them digitally. If you use the quick disconnect with an adapter, smart bulbs like Philips Hue could give you that level of control you want for daytime lighting and beyond.
