Struggling to Find Smart Gambrel Ceiling Lights for New Kitchen/Dining Cathedral Ceiling

Hey everyone,
I’m working on framing out a new kitchen/dining area with a cathedral ceiling, and I’m in the process of installing all-new lighting. The electrician suggested using 24 gambrel ceiling lights, but I really want smart lights that I can control with an app, and I’m having trouble finding fixtures that check all my boxes.

Here’s what I’m looking for:

  • 4” gambrel flush/recessed fixtures
  • Color temperature control via an app
  • Dimming control via an app
  • LED integrated or a fixture with a bulb socket that can handle smart bulbs, which will sit flush or close to the ceiling.

My issue with integrated fixtures is that the color temperature is usually controlled by a switch on the fixture itself (in the ceiling), which kind of defeats the purpose.

If anyone has any recommendations or tips, I’d really appreciate it! Thanks!

Hello! I encountered a similar challenge with integrated LEDs in my living space. My solution was to opt for smart bulbs over integrated fixtures. Consider exploring Philips Hue downlights; they offer a 4-inch model, and their app provides control over color temperature and brightness levels. Additionally, these bulbs are designed to be nearly flush with the ceiling, which should complement your design preferences nicely.

You could go with recessed housings that support regular E26 bulbs and just pop in smart bulbs like LIFX or Wiz. Both have full app control for color temp and dimming. That way, you’re not stuck with integrated fixtures and still get the flexibility you want.

Integrated LEDs can be a pain with their built-in settings, but have you checked out the Halo RL4 series? They offer app control for both dimming and color temperature. It’s a bit pricey, but they might give you the best of both worlds. They also sit pretty flush.

What I’ve done in my house is to go with retrofit kits. You can use a standard recessed fixture and then get a smart retrofit that fits in the existing housing. Way easier to replace down the road if tech changes or something better comes out.

If you’re okay with a slight DIY hack, you can get smart dimmer switches that work with regular LED recessed fixtures. You’ll get full app control over dimming and color temperature, plus you can control all the lights at once instead of individually.
